Marina Barcenilla is the Founder and Perfumer behind the multi-award winning Marina Barcenilla Parfums fragrance house, based in Glastonbury. She has dedicated decades of her life to the study and practice of perfumery and the alchemy of fragrance. She is also actively involved in space science, and is currently researching astrochemistry and the habitability of icy moons in the outer Solar System. Marina will be showing some of her initial pieces from her Aromatom perfume line and talking about the inspiration for her work.
Have you ever wondered what space smells like? Technically speaking, you wouldn't be able to smell anything in space, but isn't it fun to imagine what the Moon, Jupiter or parts of our galaxy, The Milky Way, might smell like? Come with us and find out!
This is AromaAtom’s first journey into space, and it will take you on a tour of our solar system and beyond, stopping at the Moon, Mars, Jupiter, rings of Saturn before arriving at the spiral arms of the Milky Way, to explore their surfaces, atmospheres and histories.
At each “station” you will be surrounded by images of the place where you are, and will be provided with a number of things to smell, which will give an approximation of what being in that planet or part of the galaxy might be like. As you smell, you can read or hear about the odours you are smelling, and also how and why those odours might be found at different locations in space. Basic chemistry, astronomy, physics and geology concepts are weaved into the story to help you form a realistic picture of the part of space where you are and give context to your experience. Many of the smells will be strange or even alien to you, but before moving on to the next “station”, an artistic interpretation of the smell of the planet will also be provided, and this one will be much nicer!
The exhibition ends with a scent that combines the various stages of the AromAtom journey into one single fragrance that can be worn as a perfume or used as room fragrance. Of course, it had to be named ‘Out of this World’, and it will take you all the way from Earth to the heart of the Milky Way; I like to think of it as the T.A.R.D.I.S. of the perfume world!
We will also be serving Lychee Moon, Galaxy and Jupiter cocktails inspired by Marina's work.
